My scope of practice as a personal trainer

“A Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) works in the fields of physical fitness, health and wellness, and assesses an individual clients needs, designs a comprehensive exercise program, and provides physical training and education to lead clients toward their exercise goals through safe, efficient and motivational exercise instruction and coaching. CPT’s do not diagnose or treat pain or disease and will refer such clients to healthcare professionals.”
- NASM Candidate Handbook

  • Provide basic nutritional guidance for healthy populations

  • Evaluate a client’s current eating habits and provide general guidance

  • Discuss the roles and importance of protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals)

  • Offer basic hydration strategies

  • Offer basic nutritional guidelines for anyone who wants to participate in typical athletic pursuits (martial arts training, better balance, etc.)

  • Offer advice on eating behaviors that are known to reduce the risk of disease or slow the progression of disease

  • Demonstrate healthy portion sizes

  • Refer to the client’s personal healthcare provider when necessary

The OPT MODEL

One of the reasons I decided to go with NASM for my personal trainer certification is because of its strategic approach to fortifying the human body not just for aesthetics, but for better functionality and mobility as a lifestyle. Without proper stabilization with our form in every day activities, the foundation of healthy movement crumbles. This model is adaptable to anyone, and a strong foundation of basics is important for any path in life. The Optimum Performance Training model ensures the basics of movement are prioritized for optimal function, mobility, flexibility, strength, and power.

Combining strength training with martial arts for more balance, technique, power, and skill development

Through my pursuit of understanding the human body, I have found a deep passion for both martial arts and various forms of resistance training. Over the years, I have created several tailored exercise programs inspired by martial arts wisdom and strength training science to offer a comprehensible, unique, and fun way to move and exercise. Whether your goals are to have better balance to prevent falls, to be able to learn and perform a full martial arts routine, incorporate more mindfulness into your daily movement patterns, or simply get stronger at home with a few resistance bands and kettle bells, perhaps it’s time we work together.
